What is Block Paving?

Block paving is a style and method of laying bricks to cover or create a driveway, path, our patio area. It can also be used to stylise and pave an entire outdoor area. The main benefit of laying block paving is being able to change individual bricks as weathering and accidental damage can happen. Alongside this, is the design element, giving you the opportunity to make your outdoor areas more visual by adding patterns and shapes within the paving.
The blocks are normally made from clay or concrete as well as recycled materials such as rubble or glass to ensure long-lasting use and are non-corrosive to the environment.

Where can Block Paving be used?

Block paving is typically used for drives, pavements, patios, walkways and private road surfacing. Block paving can be a stylish addition to any home and can be a simple solution to creating a new driveway or outdoor area. There are often a variation of colours to choose from, allowing further personalisation of patterns and designs. Some designs are stronger and more durable than others due to their design, for example, designs that have an interlocking pattern are stronger and will therefore last longer than those that don’t.

Block paving is usually installed by driveway specialists, this is because they know the best way to lay and interlock the bricks to give that added strength. By employing professionals to carry out installation of the blocked paving you will be guaranteed a perfect drive, they will work with you to ensure you have a design and pattern you like and will also help you choose the right colour to match the style of your property or the surroundings.
Block paving is fairly easy to install for professional pavers such as those at J L Driveways. This means that laying a block paved area to your home can be done quickly and efficiently, depending upon the size of the designated area. This includes excavation, preparing the ground, installation and final touches.

How is Block Paving laid?

Step one of any block paving project is preparation of the area, clearing it of any obstacles, inspecting the area, removing debris, and setting the boundaries of the paving. Step two is excavation of the ground or current driveway/paving area. Block paving starts off with site preparation and excavation, the site will need to be inspected and then excavated depending on the land and if there is already an existing driveway. If you have soft land or soft spots a sub base may need to be installed to provide a more stable foundation.

The site will need to be edged out so you have a set space to excavate and lay out the block paving, all block paving come with a standard sub base. The land will be compacted with a compactor and then a layer of sharp sand will need to be laid on top of it, which should be raked and then checked with string lines and screening rails to ensure it is level.

Next is the laying of the blocks/bricks in your desired pattern and the colours flow in a way that’s appropriate for the chosen pattern. They will use blocks from different packs to ensure you aren’t left with noticeable different shadings of colour patches.

Once the laying of the blocks is finished, kiln dried sand then needs to be brushed over the entire area and pushed between the joints, and compacted using a vibrating plate, this helps to strengthen the interlocking blocks. Once laid, the block paver will then go back over the area, adding more kiln dried sand to ensure that no element is left bare or lacking in strength, to ensure the longest life span possible.
